Last night was the moment I finally made the decis

Last night was the moment I finally made the decision to pull Lyric's egg sacs.

I've spent a lot of time questioning whether I should intervene, because she's been such a devoted mother. But seeing her looking so exhausted and struggling to keep her grip really hit me. After producing three sacs and putting so much into caring for them, it felt like she needed a chance to put some of that energy back into herself.

The sacs will continue incubating with me, and I've done everything I can to minimise disruption for her. My only goal now is to give her the time and space to rest, recover and hopefully regain her strength.

Sometimes the hardest decisions we make as keepers are the ones made out of love. Watching her struggle last night reminded me that, above everything else, Lyric's wellbeing comes first. ❤️

Sac in video was laid on 16th June, side slightly split so I had a little progress check....

One of today's new additions is Regan, a Harpactira namaquensis (Bronze Baboon) 🕷️

The name came pretty quickly during the transfer. The way this little demon was running around the inside of the mushroom tent had me thinking of The Exorcist, so Regan it was. 😂

I genuinely thought my female Pamphobeteus machala, Chihiro, was the spider that tested my nerves the most, but compared to Regan's lightning-fast laps around the tent, that was nothing!

Thankfully, everything went smoothly in the end, and Regan is now settled in. Definitely one of the more memorable introductions from today's arrivals already. 😅

Anyone who keeps Old Worlds will understand that mixture of excitement, respect, and mild panic!

🕷️ How Do Tarantulas Eat?

Watching a tarantula feed is one of the most fascinating parts of keeping these incredible arachnids. But what actually happens when a tarantula catches its prey?

Unlike many animals, tarantulas cannot chew solid food. Instead, they use a remarkable process that turns their meal into a liquid before consuming it.

When prey is detected, the tarantula relies on sensitive hairs covering its body and legs to detect vibrations. Once close enough, it strikes with impressive speed, grasping the prey with its fangs and injecting venom. The venom quickly subdues the prey and begins breaking down internal tissues.

Next, the tarantula uses digestive enzymes to liquefy the prey's soft tissues. Think of it as external digestion—the food is broken down outside the tarantula's body before being consumed.

Using its mouthparts, the tarantula then sucks up the nutrient-rich liquid, leaving behind indigestible material such as the exoskeleton, wings, or other tough body parts. These leftovers are often rolled into a compact ball known as a food bolus, which the tarantula will eventually discard.

The entire feeding process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours depending on the size of the prey and the species of tarantula.

Nature has equipped tarantulas with an incredibly efficient feeding strategy, allowing these ancient predators to thrive for millions of years.

Whether it was the heat or just cruel coincidence, I’ve just found Nova unresponsive in her enclosure.

I’ve held her, tried giving her fluids and honey water, but there’s been no response. She was always far too shy to be handled, and somehow the one time I’ve truly got to hold her is while she dies peacefully in my hands.

Some people will probably think I’m stupid for being this devastated because she wasn’t a “typical” pet — not a dog or a cat. But my spiders are my calm when everything else feels chaotic. Caring for them every day, checking on them, keeping their routines… it grounds me.

Losing Nova has absolutely broken my heart.

Warmer weather might be great for us… but our animals can struggle when temperatures rise. Whether you keep tarantulas, other invertebrates, reptiles, exotics, or even small mammals, heat awareness is essential during the warmer months. ❤️

Many animals cannot regulate heat the same way we do, and overheating can quickly become dangerous — or even fatal.

Here are some simple ways to help keep your animals cool, calm, and stress-free this summer:
🕸️ Ensure good ventilation
Fresh airflow helps prevent heat build-up inside enclosures and habitats.
🌀 Improve air circulation
A small fan in the room (never directly on the enclosure or animal) can help maintain stable temperatures.
🌿 Provide shade & hiding spots
Cork bark, plants, hides, tunnels, and shaded areas help animals feel secure and stay cooler.
☀️ Avoid direct sunlight
Even a short period of direct sun can dangerously overheat an enclosure, tank, or cage.
🔥 Keep habitats away from heat sources
Windowsills, radiators, TVs, heat-emitting electronics, and conservatories can all create unsafe temperature spikes.
💧 Always provide fresh water
Hydration is vital in hot weather. Keep water bowls clean, fresh, and topped up daily.
❄️ Monitor temperatures carefully
Use reliable thermometers and regularly check enclosure temps throughout the day — especially during heatwaves.

⚠️ Signs of overheating can include: • Restlessness or frantic behaviour
• Lethargy or weakness
• Excessive hiding or unusual posture
• Loss of appetite
• Seeking water constantly
• Rapid breathing in mammals and reptiles

My journey into the world of invertebrates began in March 2025 with a small colony of isopods… and like all good magic, it quickly spiraled into obsession. By July, I brought home my first tarantulas — and now my little cryptid kingdom has grown to 37 tarantulas, 2 jumping spiders, a velvet spider, a mantis, 4 scorpions, a giant African millipede, a royal python, and of course… one deeply antisocial cat. 🕷️🐍🌙

Pairing spiders always comes with risks, no matter

Pairing spiders always comes with risks, no matter how carefully you plan it. Last night I introduced my male Gandanameno velvet spider, Nyx, to the female’s enclosure. This morning I found him passed away with a puncture wound to the abdomen.

Now it’s a waiting game to see whether they successfully paired before he met his demise.

It’s easy to forget sometimes that even in captivity, these are still wild instincts playing out. Breeding attempts can go perfectly… or end like this. Nature can be cruel.

RIP Nyx 🖤

Raven, my gorgeous Phormictopus sp. Dominican Purple, decided to surprise me during her rehouse the other day. Usually she’s a bit sassy and full of attitude, but this time she calmly strolled straight onto my hand like it was no big deal 🖤💜

As someone who was a lifelong arachnophobe, this honestly felt huge. Even though she’s still a juvenile, she’s the biggest tarantula I’ve ever handled — entirely her choice, not mine 😅

But I stayed calm, let her do her thing, and she was so gentle the whole time. Never thought I’d get to a point where I could trust a spider like that… quite proud of myself, honestly.

After his ordeal during molt I decided today to very gently place Nyx (on his moss) into a new enclosure. New decor, new vibe...didn't want to reuse other enclosure incase he could 'smell' Lyra and it stressed him 🖤

So the other day I made what in hindsight was a ma

So the other day I made what in hindsight was a massive mistake, though one I'm sure many have done...

I hadn't seen my 2 Gandanameno sp velvet spiders for months. I'd been putting food in their webs, but none had been taken.

I believed they had both passed away, so the other night I decided to carefully deconstruct their enclosure and see what was going on. Unfortunately, the first one I came across had passed away. Lyra was a lovely little spider 😢

I continued searching the enclosure and came across Nyx, who at that point l thought had also passed away. It looked like he was stuck in a molt so I gently place him in a tub so I could see more clearly.

Using my phone camera and flash it was clear that Nyx was very much still alive...and mid molt. Anyone who keeps spiders/invertebrates will know that molting is not only an extremely stressful time for them, but they are also soft and vulnerable during and after, until their exoskeleton hardens up.

I decided rather than moving Nyx back to his enclosure I would leave him in the tub I had placed him in. Added some dry moss, popped in a warm place and hoped for the best!

I'm happy to report that though still not out of the woods, Nyx seems to be doing well...has been rearranging the moss to his liking, has taken a few small drinks from a cotton bud.

Hopefully he will continue to do well.

This is the first big mistake I have made during my time keeping spiders, and though my instincts were partly right, I feel guilty for the unnecessary stress I have put on Nyx.

I've been beating myself up since, I'm just extremely thankful that Nyx seems to be ok 🖤
